Giovanni Melchor Ramos is the son of Jesus Melchor and Maura Ramos, and the grandson of one of the original Master Carvers Coindo Melchor. Giovanni is a young third generation carver who has already won several awards and recognitions for his work. Giovanni learned the art form from his talented parents, and then went on to also carve and paint for the workshop of Master Carver Jacobo Angeles. With his exposure to different styles of painting, Giovanni began developing his own style of painting. He has taken home the Honorable Mention Award at the Friends of Oaxacan Folk Art's juried award show in 2013 and 2016. Giovanni was also selected as one of four young Oaxacan artists by the Museum Of Oaxacan Folk Art (MEAPO) to travel to Italy to participate in an exhibition and cultural exchange with other artists there. We love seeing how Giovanni is faithfully carrying on the traditions of his family, and keeping the art form alive for future generations. I love the painting technique on the eyes of this fantastic howling coyote! Multiple lines and varying shades provide for a reflective glass appearance in the eyes, and I have not seen this pattern used before. The shading of colors is beautifully done, and then accented by bright pops of metallic gold on the back of the ears and around the mouth. This coyote has a great sense of movement with the positioning of the upturned head to appear to be howling at the moon. The tail is removable for safe shipping, and the piece is signed by the artist.
