  1. Mata Ortiz Pottery Tomas Quintana Vulture Snake Wings

Mata Ortiz Pottery Tomas Quintana Vulture Snake Wings

    $45.00
Tomas Quintana is another very fine potter, who resides just outside of Mata Ortiz in Cuahtemoc. Tomas is widely collected for the beauty and sculptural quality in various animal and reptile forms. There is just no one who is able to sculpt the clay quite in the same way as Tomas Quintana and his wife Gloria Vasquez. The bounds of their creativity appear to be limitless! Tomas and Gloria are featured on page 149 of the new book: The Artistry and History of Mata Ortiz. We love these small vultures and how realistic the sculptural aspect is.Incredibly interesting and eye catching! And to think that this was hand formed without a potter's wheel, and painted with a paint brush hand made of human hair.. incredible! As with all of our pottery, this pot is signed by the artist. We grabbed this one as soon as we saw it! This can be purchased separately, or along with the cow skull and other vulture by Tomas Quintana. Tomas has also given the option of hanging the cow skull from the wall, and there is a raised area to allow for the display of one vulture on top of the middle section of the horns when it is hung. 6. Mata Ortiz Pottery Tavo Silveira El Indio Olla

Mata Ortiz Pottery Tavo Silveira El Indio Olla

    $240.00
Tavo Silveira is one of the shining stars amongst the second generation potters of Mata Ortiz. Tavo is a multi award winning artist, and also won the top prize (Galardon - Best in Show!) in the 2012 pottery competition sponsored by the municipal goverment in Mata Ortiz. Tavo consistently crafts some of the best work coming out of Mata Ortiz, and we are truly excited and proud to be able to offer some fine examples of his work! In this design, Tavo pays tribute to El Indio, the magnificent mountain range that towers above Mata Ortiz, representing an Indian figure rising out of the mountainside. It is a visual reminder of the people who previously inhabited the surrounding areas, and whose spirits can be felt in much of the pottery of Mata Ortiz. Tavo is the master of the carving technique, and combines elegant shapes, carved areas and beautiful paint in his designs. Such rich texture and visual appeal! One of our favorite artists! 8. Mata Ortiz Pottery Saul Silveira Dark Chocolate Brown Clay Colaboration Traditional Pot

Mata Ortiz Pottery Saul Silveira Dark Chocolate Brown Clay Colaboration Traditional Pot

    $240.00
Saul Silveira is a fine second generation potter, whose work has been greatly influenced by his famous sister, Lila Silveira. He is well known for crafting very fine light weight pottery, and is especially known for his expertise in polishing the pottery. He often gives classes to others on how to polish or burnish their pieces. We love the color combination in this traditional, yet unusual design. This piece is quite unique as it was a collaboration with another young second generation artist, Fabian Ortiz, the son of Nicolas Ortiz. I love collaboration work! I find it truly intriguing when two incredible artists come together in one art piece! Enjoy! Learn More

Rosa was recently invited to demonstrate her work at the Women Potters of Mata Ortiz event at the Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson, Arizona. 10. Mata Ortiz Pottery Roberto Olivas White Clay Carved Pot With Black and Red Designs

Mata Ortiz Pottery Roberto Olivas White Clay Carved Pot With Black and Red Designs

    $88.00
Roberto Olivas is only in his late 20's, but quite gifted at working with clay. He is married to Yadira Silveira, and as such he is also the brother in law of the famous Lila Silveira. He learned the art of carving out designs in pottery from Tavo Silveira, and he does a magnificent job in the carving and the painting of his pottery. Roberto Olivas has been making pottery for about 10 years now, and won first place in the Mata Ortiz Concurso (juried award show) in 2007. The pot is extremely well done... just gorgeous! And so light weight (another sign of high quality). A white clay color, combined with black and red paint... very unusual and simply stunning with the combination of the carved and painted designs.
